course description
This course is a survey of the political, economic, social, and cultural development of World Civilizations from the origins of these complex cultures in the Neolithic era to the emergence of the West in the fifteenth century. Topics include the early civilizations of the Near East, Egypt, India, China, the Americas, Greece, and Rome.
course structure
This is an 8-week hybrid course. Hybrid courses are conducted partially online and also have required on campus class meetings. This course has one regular class meeting per week every Tuesday from 8:00-9:25 am in BSSB 104. There are no textbooks or materials that need to be purchased for this course. All of your required readings will be included in the Canvas course modules.
student learning outcomes
Student Learning Outcomes are “the goals that describe how a student will be different because of a learning experience.” History 140 Hybrid has two student learning outcomes. Upon completion of History 140 Hybrid:
- Students will be able to develop and persuasively argue a historical thesis in a written assignment.
- Students will be able to identify and explain major social, economic, political and/or cultural historical themes or patterns in World history and apply appropriate historical methods to analyze and use primary and/or secondary sources as evidence to support the thesis.
what to expect from me

- I will create a course that facilitates your learning through content that is informative, meaningful, and relevant and provide a learning environment that promotes dialog and the exchange of ideas amongst you and your colleagues.
- I will administer a variety of assessments that will indicate if course objectives and student learning outcomes are being met.
- I will be regularly available to you and actively collaborate with you during this course to ensure your success.
what i expect from you
- You will be an active learner in this course by completing the course material assigned in a timely fashion and you will regularly engage your colleagues about the course’s content.
- You will actively seek out my support if you have any questions about course content and assignments or encounter any challenges in this course.
- You will contact me if any assignment or assessment due date established cannot be met.

how to succeed . . .
To succeed in a hybrid course, students must be self-motivated and be able to work independently and collaboratively with minimum supervision. You must be able to manage your time effectively and stay on track with your coursework. It is critical that you log on frequently (at least 3–4 times a week) into Canvas and keep up with all required activities, assignments, and readings. It is equally important that you come to class prepared. Always feel free to ask me any questions you may have about the course and its content. I am here to help you succeed this semester.

How many hours a week do you need to commit to this course? On average, it should be a minimum of 12 hours per week. Remember, this is a condensed version of a 16-week course. Students have shared with me that procrastination, delaying or postponing tasks until the last minute, is one of the major causes undermining student success in online and hybrid courses. More than likely, we have all exhibited some form of procrastination in our lifetime. I certainly am guilty of this. I encourage you to avoid this action, or better yet lack of action, as it will impact the quality of your work and learning. Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way while being a student at UCSB.
when can i access the course?
I will activate your Canvas Shell at 8:00 a.m. on the day the semester session begins. However, to give you a preview of the course content to the immediate right I have provided some links for you to explore.
Finally, I want to emphasize again that your success is important to me. Please be sure to contact me if you have any questions about the course, its content, or anything relating to academic and/or college success. I am here to help. Please take a moment to fill out the following survey (link below) so that I can get to know you and learn ways to better help you succeed in this course and at El Camino College.
Again, welcome to History 140 Hybrid. I am very excited about working with you this semester and getting to know you as well.
